My experience with the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) was centered around their 2024 annual conference in Philadelphia, PA. I attended with two other student journalists and my mentor. It was a truly transformative experience. I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the inaugural student newsroom, an exciting new initiative organized by the SEJ Publications team. This role allowed me to provide on-the-ground coverage throughout the conference, documenting sessions, workshops, and all-day tours. It was an invaluable chance to hone my reporting skills and immerse myself in critical environmental discussions.

Applying Learnings and Fostering Collaboration

The discussions at SEJ2024 reinforced the critical need for a holistic approach that integrates environmental stewardship, social equity, and our agency in driving positive change through mindful choices and collective action, as well as underscored the immense power of collaboration and advocacy in shaping a food system that benefits both people and the planet. Inspired by these profound insights and the connections I forged, I was able to take these valuable learnings and incorporate them into my local SPJ chapter with the help of other journalists. This entire experience left me with a renewed sense of purpose, empowering me to contribute actively to a more just and sustainable future within my own journalistic community.

Lessons in Advocacy

This session, like much of my time at SEJ2024, highlighted the immense power of collaboration and advocacy in shaping a food system that nourishes both people and the planet. It left me with a renewed sense of purpose in advancing toward a more just and sustainable future through informed food choices and collective activism. Being part of the inaugural SEJ student newsroom was an unforgettable experience that significantly deepened my understanding of environmental journalism and the pressing issues facing our world.

One of the most impactful sessions I covered was the April 5 panel titled “Eat Local, Just Transition, and the Search for Holistic Food System Solutions”. As a reporter, I delved into the intricate relationship between our food choices and the environment, exploring the complex challenges and possibilities in reshaping our food systems for greater sustainability and justice. The discussion also highlighted the significant give-and-take between industrial agriculture and small-scale farming.

SEJ Conference Panel

The panelists offered profound insights, consistently underscoring the necessity of a holistic approach that integrates environmental stewardship, social equity, and community empowerment. They powerfully reminded attendees, and me, of our agency in driving positive change through mindful choices and collective action.
